“A real-life fable about the causes and consequences of climate change.” – The New York Times.
“Gripping…The book’s true protagonist is fire, which Vaillant treats like a living, breathing creature that is destined to grow even more dangerous as the world becomes even more combustible…A timely and stunning account.” – Time Magazine.
Fire Weather won the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction, the Shaughnessy Cohen Prize, the John Wesley Dafoe Book Prize, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. It was named one of the best books of 2023 by The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, TIME, NPR, Slate, Smithsonian Magazine, and many other publications.
As forest fires rage across Canada, the Salt Spring Forum is pleased to welcome John Vaillant to discuss how fossil fuels, climate change and forest fires are changing the world around us—and what the future might hold.
With increasing long fire seasons and larger and more violent fires, are we capable of holding these and other climate-related disasters in check?
John Vaillant is one of Canada’s most celebrated authors. He specializes in environmental topics, with his previous books include The Golden Spruce, The Tiger and The Jaguar’s Children.
This event is dedicated to the memory of non-fiction author and Salt Spring Forum board member Derek Lundy. It will be moderated by Derek’s friend and fellow author Kevin Patterson.
