Corruption: What Everyone Needs to Know – Professor Miriam Golden, UCLA

  • ArtSpring 100 Jackson Ave. Salt Spring Island, BC Canada (map)

Two years ago, the New York Times ran a report on British Columbia: The ‘Wild West’ of Canadian Political Cash. From money laundering to campaign financing and political donations, British Columbia is clearly not immune to corruption.

Corruption is a serious issue of global consequence, and one that regularly makes front page headlines: public officials embezzling government monies, selling public offices, and trading favours in return from bribes from private companies.

How do political parties become corrupt? Do elections reduce corruption and are some systems of government better for reducing corruption? Is corruption in poor countries more common and does it decline as countries become richer? What are the political, economic and societal impacts of corruption?

Miriam Golden, a political scientist who has spent much of her career researching corruption, joins the Salt Spring Forum in discussion.

Professor Golden teaches at the University of California, Los Angeles, and is a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. She has conducted field research on corruption and political malfeasance in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Professor Golden is the co-author of Corruption: What Everyone Needs to Know® (Oxford University Press, 2017), which provides a deeper understanding of why corruption is so damaging politically, economically, and socially.

Is corruption getting worse or is it simply more visible now? How do we reduce corruption? Can political corruption ever be completely eradicated? What lessons can Canadians learn from the experiences of other countries? Find out! Join Professor Miriam Golden in conversation.
